President's Letter - March/April 2012

Reprinted from Nines Magazine

The Saab Club of North America is getting planning for the Saab Owners' Convention 2012. We need your help! Tell us what kind of events you want to see and we will do our best to incorporate as many of your ideas as possible. Survey links have been e-mailed to past attendees and there are links available on our Web site if you did not receive one. We’re looking for attendee opinions as well as non-attendee opinions. We can learn as much from those who did not attend as those who were able to join us.

As the climate of Saab is ever changing, uncertainty of what support (if any) we will be getting in the form of a parts tent, test drives, and other normal factory supplied support. At the time of this writing, there are five interested parties getting ready to make a bid for Saab in its entirety. We hope there is a successful bid and a quick recovery for the brand.

What we can do in the meantime is to make our club an informational hub for Saab owners. If a buyer for Saab in its entirety is not found, we will need to work together to keep the cars we love running into the future. Our hope is that the Saab Club of North America can be a facilitator to that goal. Suggestions from the membership as to how to achieve this would be appreciated and you can contact me directly at the contact page.

We know that some dealerships and repair facilities have decided to no longer service Saab vehicles, so if you know of a shop that needs to be taken off our listings in NINES and the Web sites, please pass along that information to Ian Glenday via our contact page. If you have a great shop that is currently servicing your vehicle, pass along that info as well. These are uncertain times in Saab history for sure, but together we’ll be able to continue to drive enjoy our Saabs for many years to come!

President's Letter - New Year Message

Normally the last President’s letter from the current issue of NINES would be in this position, however, that letter was written on December 1st (see the reprint here) and a great deal has changed since then.

At that time, all systems were on track for an orderly sale of SAAB Cars to Chinese partners, on December 19th, all of that changed. GM made the statement that they would not supply intellectual property nor support a sale to any Chinese entity. Understandably, that changed the playing field for the Chinese buyers and they pulled out of negotiations. So, faced with unpaid worker wages and a pile of outstanding debts, SAAB Cars filed for bankruptcy with the Swedish courts.

In the US, SAAB Cars North America is a separate entity from SAAB Cars. They chose not to file for any sort of bankruptcy and are working with a 3rd party administrator to ensure fair distribution of assets. I view this as a positive sign for current SAAB owners and the dealer body. This means there is hope for a plan to continue business in some manner.

Warranties have been suspended—not cancelled at this time. I know that the staff at SAAB Cars North America is working diligently to resolve this issue. GM has stated that they will be honoring warranties for vehicles sold prior to February 2010, but they are working out the details on how to administer this task. SAAB parts deliveries in the US have been halted, but again, work is being done to reopen the supply lines to the dealers. Unfortunately, for the short term, we must be patient as the details are worked out. This is an unpleasant situation for all of us, but I know people are working very hard to resolve things in the fairest manner possible.

Nobody likes that this happened, not the dealers, SAAB Cars North America staff, the Swedish workers, and most of all our SAAB owners. However, at this time, negotiations are taking place in Sweden with an emphasis in selling the business as a whole and I’m cautiously optimistic that we will once again see new SAABs produced.

SAAB Club of North America will be developing tools to help you as an owner find service and parts for your existing vehicles. Options will be posted on the website as we have information. If there is a need that you think we can assist with, please don’t hesitate to contact me via the club's contact page. I will do whatever I can to help you within my power. As a SAAB dealership owner as well as your club president, my promise to you is to personally help promote the brand and enhance your ownership experience.

Sincerely,

Annette Adams

President's Letter - January/February 2012

The Saab Club of North America Board is doing the planning and preparations for the Saab Owners' Convention 2012 at the Coralville Marriott & Convention Center, August 2nd thru 5th. This will bring us out to the Midwest, and for me personally, right into my back yard as Coralville is a sister city to Iowa City. My family and dealership teams are very excited to share our community with the SAAB community. We hope you get your vacation time marked early and are able to join us for what we hope will be a great event. We are anticipating great participation from SAAB enthusiasts from the US and Canada, seeing some old friends and making some new ones.

During the coming months Board members will be reaching out to tentative sponsors. We hope that all who are able to assist in the presentation of this SOC will jump in and do what they can. The convention Website, saabconvention.org is or soon will be updated with SOC 12 information including hotel reservation instructions.

As of press time, the status of Saab is still in negotiations. Information I am hearing is that a positive resolution will be coming within days of this writing. As a dealership owner, I appreciate the loyalty and support of the SAAB owner community. Keeping the faith in this wonderful brand and the kind words of support and patronage for dealers and independent shops is vital to the rebirth of the brand as we move into the next chapter of Saab.

We will also be looking for new Board members and officers this year. Please let us know if you are interested. There will be an official request in subsequent issues of Nines. Have a happy and prosperous New Year!

President's Letter - November/December 2011

Reprinted from Nines Magazine

First of all, I’d like to thank the membership for the vote of confidence in electing me to the position of club president. I will work hard to live up to your expectations and help this club grow. I thought I’d take a few lines to “introduce” myself and let you know a little more about me.

My husband Marty and I are the owners/operators of two Saab exclusive dealerships in Iowa. While not the largest dealerships in the country, we’re proud of the contribution we make to the brand and the Saab community. I have three children who have been very supportive of my involvement with the Saab Club and Saab Owners' Conventions. You may have seen them on site helping with events. I am also a Saab enthusiast. You may think that would be a given due to what I do for a living, but that isn’t always the case. I truly enjoy Saab and believe in the brand.

Wow! What a wonderful turnout at the Saab Owners' Convention 2011! Thanks to the hard work of the board members, we had a great convention, spectacular speakers and thankfully lucked out in the weather department. Special thanks to all of our sponsors and advertisers, without their help, this event would not be possible.

Listed in this issue are all the winners of the awards for People’s Choice and Concours. Congratulations to all. I personally know the hard work involved in getting cars ready to show. The support of Saab Cars North America was fantastic from the Heritage Collection vehicles, guest speakers, test drives, round table….the list goes on and on. Thank you.

Preparation for Saab Owners' Convention 2012 is underway and we will be posting information as it becomes available at www.saabconvention.com. Your suggestions and feedback are very important, please pass that information to anyone on the board via the Club's Contact Page.
