President's Letter - May/June 2011

As we approach the next SOC and the election of new Board members and officers, I would like to encourage you to consider becoming a Board member. There are quite a few of you who frequent and actively participate in SOCs each year. There is no doubt about the dedication that you all have to the brand; and, sharing and learning about all aspects of it during convention activities. It is challenging to run a club such as ours by remote control but the rewards of having our owners’ convention each year make it worthwhile. Please join us and help ensure the success of future SOCs. You will find information on the election in this issue of NINES on page 34.

We gave an opportunity via the web to get input for this year’s convention by surveying past convention participants. Those results were compiled by Seth Hedstrom (the survey guru). Based on the survey results, the convention committee incorporated changes in the planning to better suit the desires of the membership. Daryle Powers, SOC co-chair, has more info on SOC2011 in his update on page 34.

Just another reminder that Saab Cars North America is offering a $500 certificate to SCNA – The Club members who are buying a new Saab. We continue to be grateful to Saab Cars for this offer. Please show them that we are thankful by buying a new Saab and using this great membership value!

On behalf of the membership of The Saab Club of North America we wish Jan Åke Jonsson the very best in his retirement from Saab. Thank you for all you have done!

PS: Shameless Plug: The Saab Owners’ Convention 2011 will be held from August 18th through the 21st at the Hilton Parsippany, NJ. Information is on the SOC website.

As my term as President winds down I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support! The other Board members and I have been overwhelmed with enthusiasm in the past few months because of the increase in membership which we are sure was driven by Saab Cars North America’s and Victor Muller’s $500 certificate towards the purchase of a new Saab. We are particularly pleased that this has brought into the membership those that had no prior affiliation with the brand or the club. If you are new, I would like to welcome you and tell a little about us.

Our primary function is to bring the membership together once a year at our Owners’ Convention. Recent issues of Nines, our website and Facebook page have covered this year’s SOC in significant detail. The dedication that our members have for the marque is reflected in the tremendous support that we have had for many years from Saab in the US and from Sweden. The company has provided guest speakers from Sweden including; Victor Muller, CEO Spyker Cars, Jan Ake Jonsson, COO Saab Cars, Erik Carlsson, the famous rally champion; and, Peter Backstrom, Curator, the Saab Museum Trollhattan; and, from the US headquarters the president/managing director and senior staff members ie, Michelle Tinson, Commutations Director and John Libbos, Product Manager. Also, we have had many of the cars from historic Saab collection on display as well as concept cars and even new car releases for the first time in North America (original 9-5). The company also provides a large amount of material from their parts warehouse for us to sell at the “Parts Tent”. The SOC includes driving events, a Dyno, the car shows, seminars, guest speakers and awards banquet. The most fun is had just by being with Saab friends that have been developed through the years. So please join us August 18th through the 21st at the Hilton Parsippany, NJ. Information is on the SOC website and on page 12 of this month's Nines Magazine.

In addition to attendance at the annual convention, I encourage all club members to join and participate in local club events. You will find these clubs listed here. One of the most recent local events that our members participated in was the famous and successful Saabs @ Carlisle conducted by the Central Penn Saab Club. We are proud to be affiliated with them.

I sincerely hope that the support that we have seen from Saab owners Worldwide during the resurgence of the brand is infectious and our new members come to love Saab as many of us have through the years.

Thanks to the Board members who did a great job preparing for this year’s SOC!!!!!!

Just a reminder that Saab Cars North America is offering a $500 certificate to SCNA – The Club members who are buying a new Saab. We are most grateful to Saab Cars for this offer and we can show them that we are thankful for Saab still being our car of choice by buying a new one and using this great membership value!

We hope you are having a great start to the year and are planning on coming to New Jersey for the Convention in August!

The Saab Club of North America Board is doing the planning and preparations for SOC11, at the Hilton Parsippany, NJ, August 18th – 21st (This will be the 25th Anniversary of the Saab 900 convertible). Folks in the area requested serious consideration to have an SOC in their region and we listened. We are anticipating great participation from them and many more from the Eastern US and Canada.

During the coming months Board members will be reaching out to tentative sponsors. We hope that all who are able to assist in the presentation of this SOC will jump in and do what they can. We already have a commitment from Mike Colleran, Saab Cars of North America. There are some good speakers who are interested in doing seminars and Keynote presentations. These include: Len Lonnegren - Saab’s public relations chief from 1963 until 1989; and, Steven Rossi – marketing manager and engineer who worked with Bob Sinclair in the development of the Saab 900 convertible. We may also have a speaker from a national automobile magazine, schedule permitting. As we solidify plans, the website will be updated.

Just a reminder about the $500 certificate that Saab Cars of North America is offering on new Saabs to you, the Saab Club members. You can learn all about it here.

We will also be looking for new Board members and officers this year. Please let us know if you are interested. There will be an official request in subsequent issues of Nines.

Have a happy and prosperous New Year!

President's Letter - November/December 2010

First off, the big news: SOC 2011 will take place on August 18-21 2011 at the Hilton Parsippany located at One Hilton Court, Parsippany NJ. Put it on your calendars now! More news will follow in future issues of NINES, and on the Saab Club Web sites at www.saabclub.com and www.saabconvention.com!

I am so impressed by the progress that Victor Muller and Jan Ake Jonsson have made since we met at SOC10 in July. I know that Victor gets concerned about news media claims about “this and that” and there is little he can do once it is out there. I believe his forthrightness in dealing with the media has held him in good stead and bolsters his credibility. The news from Victor and Jan Ake that Saab is working on new ventures with major automotive entities in the furtherance of the brand is the proof in the pudding! Continued success gentlemen!

From a membership standpoint we can help in their efforts by supporting our local dealers and buying new Saabs. Saab Cars of North America is offering you, our members, a $500 discount on a qualified new Saab. We are very grateful to Victor and Mike Colleran (COO, SCNA – the company) for offering this to our members. Seth and I have assisted some in getting the needed documentation in time to close on their new cars. Mike and his staff have come into play as needed to allow the sale to proceed. Thanks to all who have participated thus far and enjoy your new Saabs!
